Display of bamboo branches with TANABATA wish cards and Origami decorations.

Introduce the story of TANABATA.

★Summer Festival (NATSUMATSURI)

The exciting festival is the most popular summer event all over Japan.

Starting with drumming, children carry MIKOSHI (a portable shrine).

After the show, a variety of traditional summer games and plays are available.

Kodomono Kuni students perform Japanese dancing, singing & operetta on stage.

Rice Cake Pounding (MOCHITSUKI)

Introduce and demonstrate Japanese traditional rice pounding to local residents including Kol Ami people.

Participants will experience rice cake pounding and enjoy the taste of Japanese rice cake, Mochi.

     
   
     
     
     
Japanese New Year Program

Introduce how children in Japan celebrate new year holidays.

Kol Ami ECP (Early Childhood Program) and neighborhood children and parents are invited to join in this exciting event.

They can bring anyone they wish.

The program starts with the Lion Dance (SHISHI-MAI) & Japanese Drum beating.

Participants will experience Japanese Tea Ceremony, Origami crafts, putting on Kimonos.

Display of Hina Dolls in the Atrium.

Introduce and explain about the origin of the tradition and how to celebrate.

Learn the manners on the Tatami Mat. Special rice crackers are offered to children and guests.

Families, relatives, neighbors & friends are welcome.

Kodomono Kuni children visit the local nursing home.

They sing Japanese songs wearing kimonos and introduce Origami, have conversations and interact with the residents and staff of Schnurmacher Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing, 12 Tibbits Ave., White Plains, NY 10606

     
     
     
Boys' Day (KODOMONO HI)

Display of Carp Streamers, Dolls and Samurai Helmet, typical of the Boys' Day celebration.

Introduce and explain about the origin and history of this event.

Children make Origami carp streamers/helmets for the day.

Japanese Sports Day (UNDO KAI)

A popular athletic event of schools in Japan.

Children and adults participate in the various kinds of athletic games.

Highlands Middle School soccer field, 128 Grandview Ave., White Plains, NY 10605, is used for this event.

Some games are open for public participation.

All families & friends are invited.
